Official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to Take Place on Thursday, April 28th at 8pm
The Midtown Village Merchants Association (MVMA), in Partnership with the City of Philadelphia, and locally based light artists, Klip Collective, will officially unveil their long awaited neon light installation symbolically titled, “Roy G Biv” this Thursday, April 28th, 2022 on the corner of Juniper and Sansom in Center City, Philadelphia.
The artwork, commissioned by the MVMA and co-sponsored by the City of Philadelphia was installed this past March and was inspired by the water main break at the same location on July 3, 2018.
The title of the piece, “Roy G Biv” was decided upon by both Klip Collective and the Midtown Village Merchants Association as a nod to not only the diversity and culture of the LGBTQ+ community within Midtown Village, but as because rainbows symbolize a fresh start and new beginnings. The rainbow serves as a gateway to Midtown Village, as well as our historic Gayborhood. Midtown Village is lively, welcoming, and full of surprises and the hope is this sculpture will enliven this corridor and welcome those from far and wide!
The ribbon cutting ceremony for “Roy G Biv” will also serve as the launch of the Midtown Village Merchants Association’s “Come on Spring, Do Your Thing” weekend, which takes place from Friday, April 29th – Sunday, May 1st. The weekend will feature spring-like festivities by MVMA merchants, bars, and restaurants and will offer spring themed specialties, fun drinks, menu items, decor, and fun events within each of their establishments.
